Opening hours

What are the opening hours of the tunnel?

The tunnel is open 24 hours a day. In spring and autumn, the tunnel is closed for two weeks from Monday to Saturday between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. From December to April, special restricted opening hours apply on Saturdays. Detailed opening hours can be found here.

When is the entry to Livigno possible on Saturdays between December and April?

Arrival is possible until 06:00 am and again from 10:00 am.

When is it possible to leave Livigno on Saturdays between December and April?

Departure is possible in the morning until 9 a.m., and then again in the evening, from 6 p.m. at the earliest. During periods of heavy traffic and in February, departure is possible from 7 p.m. at the earliest.

Ticket purchase

What kind of ticket is required for an outward journey in November (summer fare) and a return journey in December (winter fare)?

You can purchase a summer return ticket. The return ticket is valid for three months from the date of arrival and can be used across seasons.

Can I buy e-tickets for multiple vehicles?

It is possible to buy e-tickets for multiple vehicles. You will receive an e-mail containing all QR codes for each vehicle, as well as all tickets as PDF attachments. The tickets can be passed on to the other vehicles in paper or electronic form.

How long does it take for the e-ticket to be delivered to my email address after purchase?

The ticket will be delivered immediately after purchase. If you do not receive the e-mail, we recommend checking your spam folder. The ticket can also be downloaded from your customer account.

What should I do if I entered the e-mail address incorrectly?

The e-mail address can be changed at any time in the customer account. Tickets that have already been purchased will not be automatically sent to the new address. The ticket can be downloaded from the customer account.

What should I do if my ticket is not delivered?

In this case, we recommend that you first check your spam folder. If the ticket is not in the spam folder or if there is a possibility that an incorrect e-mail address was entered when the ticket was purchased, we kindly ask you to correct the e-mail in your customer account and download the ticket manually.

Can I also pay for the online ticket in Euros?

Online tickets can only be purchased in CHF.  The amount will be charged to you in your local currency at the bank's current exchange rate.

Can I also buy my ticket on site?

It is possible to buy your ticket on site at the tunnel exit (Italian side). We accept cash payments in CHF or EUR (no EUR coins / change in CHF only) or EC-/ and credit cards and TWINT. However, if you buy a ticket on site, you will not benefit from the online discount.

Where is the tunnel payment office / toll booth located?

The payment point is located at the tunnel exit on the Italian side.

Validity of tickets / return tickets

How long are e-tickets valid?

Tickets purchased online are valid exclusively during the selected season (summer season from 1 May to 30 November / winter season from 1 December to 30 April) and for a maximum of three months from the selected date of arrival. Return tickets remain valid when the season changes and are valid during three months from the date of arrival.

Return tickets are valid for three months from the date of arrival. The tickets remain valid even if the season changes. Return tickets are valid in both directions.

Can I enter Livigno with a return ticket?

Return tickets are valid in both directions.

I bought a return ticket arrival on Saturday and will now arrive on another day - is the ticket valid?

Yes, the Saturday ticket is also valid for arrival on Sunday to Friday. However, there will be no refund of the excess amount paid.

Is the return ticket arrival between Sunday and Friday also valid for the return journey on Saturdays?

The return ticket Sunday to Friday is valid for the return journey on all weekdays including Saturday.

Is the return ticket arrival on Saturday valid on the weekdays from Sunday to Friday?

The return ticket arrival on Saturday is valid on all weekdays including Saturday.

Refund / Cancellation

Can I have my e-ticket cancelled?

Tickets purchased online cannot be refunded or exchanged. Refunds are also excluded if the journey is not taken due to illness, accident, force majeure or similar circumstances.

Can I have my on site purchased return ticket cancelled?

As a rule, return tickets purchased on site cannot be refunded or exchanged. Refunds are also excluded if the journey is not taken due to illness, accident, force majeure or similar circumstances.

Vehicle categories

Is a converted bus under 3.5 t considered a passenger car or camper van? What kind of ticket do I have to buy?

The entry in the vehicle registration document is decisive, the ticket must be purchased accordingly.

I have a passenger car with trailer - do I have to buy an additional ticket for the trailer?

There is no additional charge for trailers. A ticket for passenger cars is sufficient.

I have a passenger car with a caravan - which ticket do I have to buy?

Motorhomes and passenger cars with caravans fall into the same category and need a camper/caravan ticket.

Is there a weight limit for motorhomes?

The rate for motorhomes or caravans remains the same, regardless of whether the weight is under or over 3.5 t.

General information

Where can I purchase the EKW value card?

The EKW value card can only be purchased on site at the tunnel toll gate. We accept cash payments in CHF or EUR (no EUR coins / change in CHF only) or EC and credit cards and TWINT.

Are there discounted tickets for residents?

There is no discount on individual tickets. However, value cards can be purchased at special rates at the tunnel toll station (see section Prices). The value card for residents can only be purchased on site.

Are winter tyres compulsory?

During the winter months (November to April) we strongly recommend that you equip your vehicle with winter tyres. If your car does not have four-wheel drive, we also recommend carrying snow chains. However, driving with snow chains is prohibited in the tunnel itself.

What is the maximum vehicle height and width allowed to pass the tunnel?

The maximum vehicle height is 3.60 m, the maximum vehicle width is 2.55 m.

How long is the tunnel?

The tunnel has a length of 3.5 km and is only passable with one lane.

Why do I have to pay a passage fee?

The tunnel Munt La Schera is privately owned by Engadiner Kraftwerke AG. The fee must be paid for the use of this private tunnel.

Is the tunnel passable by bicycle?

No! For safety reasons, bicycles are officially prohibited. You will find information on the bike shuttle service under information.

If I contact ticketing@ekwstrom.ch for help, at what intervals will my e-mails be answered?

Incoming e-mails will be answered from Monday to Friday during normal business hours.

Is the tunnel public?

No, the Munt La Schera road tunnel is privately owned by Engadiner Kraftwerke AG. The use of the tunnel is governed by the terms of use. Use of the road tunnel implies acceptance of these terms of use.
